SUSPECT SHOT

FOLLOWING ARMED HOME INVASION

A 63-year old Waunona Neighborhood resident was home alone early Wednesday afternoon, December 8th. He responded to a knock at the door and was confronted by a gunman. The stranger, a 30-year old Madison man, robbed the victim of money, jewelry, weapons, electronics, and other items. The homeowner was tied up in the basement during the home invasion. The victim said the criminal left for a period of time. He then heard someone come back into his home. He began calling out for help, only to have the robber return to the basement. The suspect freed the homeowner and told him he was now taking him with him - to the victim's credit union. The suspect drove the victim's SUV, with the victim in the passenger seat. Sometime around 2:00 p.m., the suspect pulled up to the drive-thru at the UW Credit Union, 200 E. Broadway, which is in Monona. A 24-year old teller recognizes the victim, and in a brief moment while the suspect is looking down, she mouths to her customer, something to the effect: "Are you ok?" She was able to determine, by the look on his face, that he was not ok. She then began to stall on the transaction. She alerts a manager, and the manger calls 911. Monona Police are on scene in about four-minutes. Prior to the arrival of officers, staff at UW Credit Union continued to stall. When officers arrived, the victim opened the passenger door and was able to get out and take cover. Simultaneously, the suspect gunned the engine smashing into a Monona squad. A Monona officer used deadly force to stop the threat. Law enforcement officers converged on the SUV, secured the suspect's firearm, and then rendered CCR in an attempt to save his life. These measures were not successful. Monona Police Chief Walter Ostrenga has asked for the Madison Police Department to review the officer involved shooting, and it will be up to the Dane County District Attorney to determine whether deadly force was justified. The Madison Police Department and the Monona Police Department would like to recognize the UW Credit Union teller for her quick actions. The departments would also like to recognize the bravery and courage demonstrated by the victim. Detectives will also be looking to determine whether the suspect might be connected to other crimes. He has a lengthy criminal history in Dane County including drug dealing.
