posted

Madison, Wis The Shelley Glover Sports Education Foundation (SGSEF), Madison Parks, and the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Foundation are pleased to announce a new community partnership sure to make waves in Madison this summer! The new Goodman Pool Waves summer swim team is made possible by a grant to SGSEF from the Goodman Foundation. Together the organizations are working with Madison Parks and the Goodman Pool, whose organizations are taking the lead on launching the swim team. The Goodman Pool Waves is a new competitive summer swim team, available to children ages 6 - 18 at the Goodman Pool. The team will host week-day practices and participate in week-end meets as part of Madison's All-City Swim League, culminating with the All-City swim meet at the end of July. The swim team is open to any city of Madison resident, and scholarships are available to those with financial need. For more information or to register for the Goodman Pool Waves please visit www.cityofmadison.com/parks/pool. For questions or scholarship information, please contact goodmanpool@cityofmadison.com. Both the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Foundation and the Shelley Glover Sports Education Foundation have long supported swimming in Madison, the Goodman Foundation through its funding to establish Madison's first public pool and annual funding for family pool memberships, and SGSEF through the Shelley Glover Pool Fund, a permanent endowment at the Foundation for Madison Public Schools, and through its annual Kids Swimming for Kids events which raise funds to support financial aid for pool memberships and swim lessons for children in need at the Goodman Pool. "We are honored to be working with the Goodman Foundation and the Madison Parks to further swimming opportunities in Madison," says SGSEF President Carmella Glover. "As a Shorewood Pool Shark, Shelley loved being part of a summer swim team, and the fitness and fun it provided. It's long been a dream of ours to support a competitive swim team at the Goodman Pool." Adds E.G. Schramka, Executive Director and Vice-President of the Goodman Foundation, "The Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Foundation is excited to be a part of the Goodman Pool Waves. One of the focus areas of the foundation is public recreation and we cannot think of a better way to continue the legacy of Irwin and Bob Goodman than the Goodman Pool Waves summer swim team. Summer swim teams in Madison are a great combination of fun and recreation." "Madison Parks and Goodman Pool are so thrilled to have a new competitive swim team this summer," says Kevin Briski, Madison Parks Superintendent. "We are thankful for the support of the Goodman Foundation and the Shelley Glover Sports Education Foundation in making this a reality. The kids who swim at Madison's only public pool will get a chance to be a part of a team. We will all be there to cheer on the Goodman Pool Waves at the All City Swim Meet this summer!" The Shelley Glover Sports Education Foundation is an organization established to honor Shelley Glover, a gifted and compassionate athlete and leader. Glover, a Madison, Wisconsin native, was a proud member of the Shorewood Pool swim team and also an Olympic-development team soccer player. At the age of 15, she was named to the United States Development Ski Team, but died following a ski training accident in May 2004 at age 17. At a young age Shelley was quite aware of the disparity in kids' access to sports, and wished most of all for all kids to be able to have as much fun with sport as she did, and to enjoy the benefits it provided her in the development of friendships, self-esteem and physical fitness. She is remembered notably as one of the greatest alpine skiers to come out of the Midwest, yet is equally remembered for her compassion and humility. To help realize Shelley's dream, the Shelley Glover Sports Education Foundation (SGSEF) was founded. SGSEF is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting athletic activities and competition for youth of all ages and abilities with a focus on Shelley's favorite sports, skiing, swimming, and soccer. SGSEF will provide support for athletic opportunities and competition through the development of innovative programs and community partnerships that expand access to sports.
