Greenway Plaza Businesses Damaged by Fire

posted

The City of Madison Fire Department responded to an early morning fire at 1325 Greenway Cross. The fire was called in by a passerby who reported flames and smoke showing. Firefighters arrived to find smoke showing from the exterior of the building. Crews entered through a front entrance that leads to a common hallway. Inside, firefighters reported smoke, flames and smoldering embers on the floor. Fire was also found above a false ceiling that had crews chasing hot spots for more than two hours. Engine Company 1 ventilated the roof, which greatly slowed the progress of the fire. Knockdown was declared at 6:44. Crews remained on the scene to maintain watch for any remaining hotspots. Investigators were called in. Damages are still being calculated but are expected to exceed $500,000. Businesses at Greenway Plaza include Greenway Crossing Montessori, Panaderia & Taqueria Marimar, El Palacio, a clothing store, and Madineh Academy of Madison. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
