Traffic Engineering Name Change

The City of Madison has changed the name of its Traffic Engineering Division within the Department of Transportation to the Mobility & Infrastructure Division.

The new name better reflects the wide range of work the division does to help people move safely and efficiently throughout Madison — whether they walk, bike, take transit, drive or use another way to get around.

What changed? Same high-quality service, new inclusive name.

The division's services, programs, projects and commitment to Madison residents will remain uninterrupted.

What We do

One transportation system, many City teams. Together, these teams help keep Madison moving.

  • Mobility & Infrastructure Division (formerly Traffic Engineering)

Part of the Transportation Department, this team plans, designs, and manages how streets and transportation infrastructure work — including pedestrian and bicycle facilities, roadway safety, signals, signs, markings, street lighting, traffic operations, radio/fiber communications, and other transportation infrastructure.

  • Metro Transit

Part of the Transportation Department, this team helps ensure streets are designed to support safe, reliable, and accessible public transportation.  The team provides input on bus stops and transit lines, manages and operates Madison's public transit system, and provides bus service throughout the community.

  • Parking Division

Part of the Transportation Department, this team manages Madison's public parking system that including garages, lots, street meters, on-street permit parking, and parking enforcement.  This team provides input on on-street parking, loading areas, accessible parking, parking regulations, and curb use, helping balance parking needs with safe and efficient travel for people walking, biking, taking transit and driving.

Additional City teams that assist with transportation

  • Streets and Urban Forestry

This team ensures Madison streets are functional, well maintained, and welcoming places for everyone.  The team oversees Madison's street system, refuse collection, and handles snow and ice removal.

  • Engineering Division

This team turns transportation plans into safe, functional streets and infrastructure. They help design and oversee the construction of streets, drainage, sidewalks, paths and other public infrastructure to ensure projects serve all transportation users.

  • Planning Division

Helps to shape how Madison grows by planning for future neighborhoods, developments, and transportation connections.  The team works with a number of City teams and developers to plan the connection and layout of streets, sidewalks, bicycle facilities, and other infrastructure so new areas are safe, accessible and connected to the broader transportation network.
