New Artwork on Display by Natalie Furtado
postedAs Natalie became the weekly Bingo caller at Madison Senior Center, she spent more time with different elders. Natalie began to reflect and notice the different feelings she leaves each interaction with. She noticed that there is a certain stillness, and maybe sometimes an uneasiness, that exists when two people from polarizing age groups sit down, talk, and spend time together. Through interviews with senior adults, Natalie explores themes of aging, learning, loving, losing, and spending time with our elders. As overlapping topics emerge, this dual component project, consisting of a visual art installation and a video art collage, seeks to understand how spending time with the elderly may influence a person. Utilizing different techniques, overlaid with symbolism, Natalie dissects the stories of her aged peers to learn, when stripped down to the bare bones, what really matters as time goes on.
Natalie Furtado is a multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, but is currently pursuing a dual degree in Pharmacology & Toxicology and Biology, with certificates in Global Health & 3D Studio Art from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
