Madison Christmas Tree Collection Delayed

The second round of Christmas tree collection in Madison has been delayed. The Streets Division is running behind due to the large volume of storm damaged limbs that are being picked up along with the trees and the nearly continuous snow and ice operations of the last two weeks. "Our crews collected over 600 tons of Christmas trees and brush in January," Madison recycling coordinator George Dreckmann said. "That is three times more than our average. The large volume was due to the major storm damage from the December blizzard." "This large volume of material meant that we needed close to four week to complete our first round of Christmas tree collection," Dreckmann said. "We usually complete a round in two weeks." Christmas tree collection is always subject to the whims of Mother Nature. The past two weeks have required a lot of snow and ice work. This has taken staff that is usually assigned to collect Christmas trees. "Since January 22nd we have only two days when we have not had to do significant snow and ice work," Dreckmann added. "This has limited our ability to assign staff to tree and brush collection." The Streets Division is planning to resume Christmas tree and brush collection as soon as the weather allows, hopefully the week of February 11th. Residents are asked to dig out any trees of brush that has been covered with snow if possible. "We appreciate our customer's patience," Dreckmann said. "Hopefully, we will catch a break in the weather that will allow us to get the trees picked up soon."
