MFD Rolls Out "Mini Ambulance"

The City of Madison Fire Department debuted a new "mini ambulance" this week. The ASAP Medstat is a specialized vehicle manufactured for on- and off- road events and emergencies. The Medstat is the first of its kind in Wisconsin. The patient compartment is both air conditioned and heated, providing greater comfort for the patient and paramedics. The department anticipates using the new apparatus for a variety of special events, including the Rhythm & Booms and Elver Park fireworks displays, marathons and triathlons; virtually any event where large numbers of people make it difficult to navigate traditional apparatus. The Medstat has become popular for use in the military, which has ordered them for service in the field. The Medstat also has the potential to be utilized in a variety of situations within Dane county and Wisconsin due to its ease of transport without specialized hauling vehicles. The Medstat needs only a truck with a trailer hitch for transport on a standard trailer. The department will be keeping the vehicle trailered 24/7 for ready response. The enclosed patient compartment ensures patient privacy and security. The vehicle's all-terrain capability makes it ideal for mass casualties, natural disasters, and missing persons. The MFD is using the Advanced Life Support model, which has ample space on the interior of the cab for supplies and equipment, along with attachments for a backboard for traumatic injury. The patient compartment is large enough for a full size cot, and can accommodate up to 1500 pounds of equipment and personnel. The unit was purchased with Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS) funding the City receives from the federal government. The funding is provided to increase EMS capabilities.
