
Madison Ranked Fourth Safest City in Recent FBI Report
The FBI's most recent report on crime lists Madison as number four in a list of the country's safest cities in 2012. According to the report, Madison has a murder rate 73% below the national average and a robbery rate 11% below average. FBI statistics named Irvine, California as the safest city in the country with a murder rate 80% below average and a robbery rate 86% below. "This is great news to receive," Madison Mayor Paul Soglin. "I am confident that programs like Community Policing and our Neighborhood Resource Teams that take city staff from a number of departments into challenged neighborhoods, make a huge difference. We won't however, be satisfied until we are ranked number one." According to the FBI report, law enforcement agencies nationwide reported an increase of 1.2% in the number of violent crimes reported.
