MPD, Project Respect, others help homeless families

It began with a Madison Police detective’s realization that many women who are victims of human trafficking are also mothers, living in area hotels with their children – some of whom are not even registered for school.

Determined to help, the detective joined forces with Project Respect and other social service agencies last year. They solicited limited donations from family, friends and a few others to assist homeless families, providing things like clothing, backpacks filled with school supplies, and gift cards for gas or food.

Recently the plight of these women and their families was featured in the Wisconsin State Journal’s Homeless in Madison/A City Challenged series.  

The in-depth coverage was followed by a hugely successful donation drive held by the MPD and many other organizations. The eclectic team will be soon be distributing items to families, and providing assistance with things like housing, education and anything else those living in hotels might need.
