MPD’s Mounted Unit welcomes new member

Cooper makes first public appearance Friday

Cooper, the newest member of the MPD (and one of its largest!) will be introduced to the community Friday morning, November 18th, as he makes his first appearance as a Madison Police horse.
 
The four-year-old Percheron Gelding weighs in at some 1700 pounds, with a shoulder height of 5-feet-11-inches.
 
He will become the fifth horse on MPD’s Mounted Unit and will serve in many ways: neighborhood patrols, demonstrations, crowd management, search and rescue.
 
Cooper is largely funded through a very generous donation from the John Sheehan family. Mr. Sheehan is an executive with UW Health, and Cooper’s coming out celebration will take place at 11:30 a.m. at UW Health at The American Center, 4602 Eastpark Blvd.
 
Like other MPD horses, Cooper is sponsored through the non-profit group Friends of Madison Mounted Horse Patrol. His purchase price, equipment, boarding, and veterinary costs are covered by the group, and in this case the Sheehan family stepped in with a significant donation on behalf of Cooper.
