Alder Matt Phair - Not Running for Re-Election in 2019
Open Seat in District 20 in Spring 2019
Alder Matt Phair will not seek re-election to the Common Council in the spring of 2019. He has decided that after four terms representing District 20, he will focus his energy in other places, mostly with his family.
“It is time to step aside and allow for fresh leadership to emerge. Serving on the Council has been extremely rewarding. I will look back fondly on the relationships I've built in District 20 and on the Council and am proud of the progress we made together,” Phair said.
Alder Phair will continue to work on the persistent challenges that his district and city faces, just in different capacities. He believes there are several issues that the City should prioritize in coming years. Specifically, he is calling on the City to prioritize a public health approach to violence prevention, more investment in affordable housing, a transportation system that works for all Madison residents and reinvestment in communities of color with the focus on upward mobility and connecting people to the economy of the future. “The ultimate measure of our community’s success will be whether we close our historical opportunity gaps so everyone has access to our quickly changing and growing economy,” Phair said.
