Alder Christian Albouras Announces Resignation from Madison Common Council Effective May 20, 2022

Today, Alder Christian Albouras, District 20, has announced his resignation from the Madison Common Council effective May 20, 2022 at noon.

“It is bittersweet to share that our family will be moving out of the Meadowood Neighborhood and out of District 20. This will necessitate my resignation as alder of District 20 on the Madison Common Council on May 20th, 2022,” said Alder Albouras.

The Meadowood Neighborhood Association President, Terry Evanson, said: “It has been my distinct pleasure to work with Christian as a city alderperson and as a neighbor in Meadowood. He is always available and willing to listen and respond to his constituents. He respects and closely works with the local neighborhood associations and keeps the associations in the loop of city council decision-making. His thoughtfulness, hard work and commitment to District 20 has served our district well.”

A close neighbor, Shareen Haq, said: “We are a tight knit community and all look out for each other. Miriah, Christian, and their daughter are like family to us. We are going to miss living across the street from them, but also excited for their next chapter as family.”

“Serving on the council and advocating for the best interest of District 20 residents has been one of the most rewarding experiences during my career. I want to share my appreciation to the alders who will continue to serve on the council, dedicate their time, and focus on the needs of residents in Madison. My wife and I will continue to be engaged with residents to support the city and region, and ensure that greater Madison is a place where everyone can thrive,” Alder Albouras added.

“We appreciate Alder Albouras’ service to his District and the City. We’re thankful for his impact to the community,” said Council President Furman.

“Ald. Albouras brought a valuable perspective to the Common Council, and made sure that his constituents’ voices were heard in city government. We’ll miss him, but wish him all the best,” added Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway.

Albouras was elected to the Common Council in April 2019 and re-elected in April 2021. He has served on the Community Development Block Grant Committee, Plan Commission, Urban Design Commission, City-County Liaison Committee, Ad Hoc Landmarks Ordinance Review Committee, Economic Development Committee, Madison Police Department Policy and Procedure Review Ad Hoc Committee, Public Safety Review Committee, and Vending Oversight Committee.

The procedure for filling a vacancy on the Common Council is set out in Madison General Ordinance 2.03 and Wisconsin State Statute 17.23(1)(a).

The Common Council President oversees the application process to fill the vacancy. Received applications are reviewed by the Common Council Executive Committee. This process includes an interview of applicants. After conducting interviews, the committee will make a recommendation to the Common Council. The Common Council then appoints the interim District 20 Alderperson to serve until a new alder is elected and sworn in on April 18, 2023.

The process to fill the vacancy will begin soon and a timeline will be made available in the near future.
