July 9, 2025

The Wisconsin Election Commission announced this morning that it has concluded its investigation into unprocessed absentee ballots from the November 5, 2024 election in the City of Madison. The City cooperated fully with the WEC throughout the investigation, including providing all documents requested and making staff available to answer questions as needed.

“I want to thank Commissioners and WEC staff for conducting a thorough inquiry into this matter, as well as City staff who provided documents and testimony. We are currently reviewing WEC’s report and hope that it can provide lessons that we and other Wisconsin clerks can learn to prevent similar errors in the future,” said City Attorney and Acting Clerk Michael Haas.

During elections in 2025, the Clerk’s Office implemented additional safeguards and procedures to ensure all eligible absentee ballots were accounted for. City officials may have additional comments on the report's findings and recommendations after fully reviewing it, and in conjunction with the Commission meeting on July 17 to discuss the report.
