South District Captain encourages drivers to slow down
postedSouth Side neighbors, we need your help!
The Madison Police Department launched a data-driven and proactive approach to keeping our roads safer this summer.
The South District is committed to reducing hazardous driving behavior in our area. Unfortunately, we have experienced far too many accidents on the south side that could have been prevented if drivers were obeying speed limits and traffic laws.
While we will use a variety of strategies to accomplish this goal, we know that we are most effective when we partner with our community. To do so effectively, I am asking community members to do the following:
- Monitor your speed
- Obey traffic signals
- Consider posting signage on your residential lawns
- “Slow down" signs can be picked up at the South District Police Station at Hughes Place in Madison thanks to our partnership with Safe Communities
- Report erratic driving behavior (license plate numbers and vehicle description) to the Speeder's Hotline at 608-266-4822
- Report areas of hazardous driving behavior and traffic safety concerns on the Madison Police Department website
Here are some things that you can expect from officers serving in the South District:
- Officers to be proactive in enforcing hazardous driving behaviors (i.e. speeding, signal/sign violations)
- Application of the speed board throughout the district (major thoroughfares and intersections)
- Increased traffic enforcement operations
- Collaboration with other community partners, city agencies and personnel such as elected officials, Metro Transit and the Streets Division
I know that our efforts will take time, but I also know that by working together we can make a positive impact. The Summer Traffic Safety Initiative runs now until Sept. 1, 2026.
Thank you,
Captain H. Zanders 4233
