
Meeting and Event Highlights for the Week of January 8, 2024

- Plan Commission: The Plan Commission meeting will take place on Monday, January 8, 2024, in virtual format at 5:30 p.m. Agenda items include development related requests in Districts 2, 4, and 12.
- Common Council: The Common Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, in hybrid format at 6:30 PM. Agenda items include celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day, establishing voting locations for the 2024 spring elections, financing the Phase 1 redevelopment of the Triangle public housing site, and updating salaries for alders.
- Board of Public Works: The Board of Public Works meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, in virtual format at 4:30 PM. Agenda items include authorization for additional design engineering services for John Nolen Drive, approving the City of Madison standard specifications for Public Works construction, and approving the plans, specifications, and schedule of assessments for the Lowell Street Assessment District, the East Wilson Street, and East Doty Street Assessment District, and the Lake Mendota Drive Assessment District.
- Board of Park Commissioners: The Board of Park Commissioners meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at the Parks Division Lakeside Offices at 330 East Lakeside Street at 6:30 PM. Agenda items include the acquisition of property in Districts 12 and 13, an informational presentation regarding current land management and sustainability initiatives, and expanding the sailboat storage area at Warner Park.

- 2024 Neighborhood Grant Program: Have you and your neighbors been thinking about making community improvements or strengthening your neighborhood group? The Planning Division will again offer funding through the Neighborhood Grant Program for Leadership, Capacity Building, and Community Enhancement projects. The application deadline is Monday, February 12, 2024, at 4:30 PM. You can refer to this year’s guidelines for assistance. Once you are ready to start an application, please contact the Planning Division at Neighborhoods@cityofmadison.com and share project ideas with your alderperson. We also invite you to attend an optional orientation meeting.

- Groove & Glide - Friday, January 12, 2024: Make the most of winter at the Groove & Glide event! Experience the fun and beauty of ice skating under the lights with fun music and games. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Grab your friends, a date, or the whole family, and come have some fun on the ice.
- Bird & Nature Adventures (Owen Conservation Park) - Saturday, January 13, 2024: Explore Owen Conservation Park on gentle trails through historic oak openings on a hillside with an Ice Age kettle and along restored prairies with beautiful vistas on this high point overlooking the west side of Madison. Co-sponsored by Madison Parks, Badgerland Bird Alliance, Madison Audubon Society, and the Friends of Owen Conservation Park. Free, family-friendly guided nature walks at Owen Conservation Park are held on the 2nd Saturday of each month, year-round, 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM. No registration is required. No pets are allowed.
- Candlelit Snowshoe Hike - Saturday, January 13, 2024: In partnership with Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Monona Parks & Recreation and Madison Parks present this wonderful snowshoe hiking event! Hundreds of softly glowing lights illuminate the trails through Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Edna Taylor Conservation, and Woodland Park. Snowshoe or hike and enjoy a roaring bonfire outside. All ages are welcome.

- Reduced Service on Monday, January 15, 2024: Buses will follow Saturday schedules on Monday, January 15, 2024, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
- Public Nominations for the Police Civilian Oversight Board: The Police Civilian Oversight Board (PCOB) is currently seeking nominations from the community to fill vacancies on the Board. The PCOB supervises and works collaboratively with the City of Madison’s Office of the Independent Police Monitor (OIM) to review and make recommendations regarding police discipline, use of force, and other policies and activities.
- Job shadow program looks to connect officers and community members in a new way: The Madison Police Department has created a special job shadow program allowing community members and officers to learn from one another. The Madison Proximity Project pairs a Madison resident with an officer. The officer will shadow this person at their place of employment, and in return, that person will participate in a ride-along with the officer.
- Dane County Executive Parisi, Madison Mayor Rhodes-Conway Announce Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award Honorees: On January 4, 2024, Ashzianna Alexander, Mathias Lemos Castillo, and Dr. Jack Daniels were announced as this year’s recipients of the City-County Humanitarian Awards honoring Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King. The award winners were selected by the City-County Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission and are community members who reflect the values of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Madison Police Department creates Hate Crimes Task Force: The Madison Police Department has created a new task force to help identify and prevent hate crimes in Madison. The task force was proactively formed to address bias-motivated threats, harassment, and violence throughout Madison.
- Pick Up Native Wisconsin Seeds: Native Wisconsin Seeds are now available in six - yes, SIX - of our libraries! This year, we've added another new library location to the Seed Library - Hawthorne Library! You can now pick up seed packets at Sequoya, Meadowridge, Pinney, Goodman South Madison, Lakeview, and Hawthorne Libraries - no library card is needed. Why Native seeds now? Native Wisconsin plant seeds are best sown in the fall and left to overwinter.
