Snow Emergency Declared

A snow emergency has been declared for the evening of January 9, 2024.  Alternate side parking rules will be in effect for the entire City of Madison for at least the next two evenings to assist with clearing the roads, including in the Snow Emergency Zone in and around downtown. Please park on the EVEN side of the street tonight, January 9th, and the ODD side of the street tomorrow night, January 10th. Snow emergencies can be extended should weather and road conditions require it.

Snow Plow Updates

The Streets Division will be plowing every street in Madison tonight starting around 10:00 PM, and a snow emergency will be in effect. More details about our plowing operation can be found in the Snow Plow Update on the winter website (or your inbox if you subscribe to receive it directly).

Citywide plowing takes approximately 12 to 14 hours to complete once the operation begins. It is standard protocol for the city to wait until the storm is almost over before starting this massive task. The operation involves almost every available person from the Streets Division, including people from Parks and Engineering and also heavy equipment contractors brought in by the Streets Division. Around 150 trucks work together to push snow from around 1,800 miles of pavement.

Remember to shovel your sidewalk by noon tomorrow! Check out this winter information webpage to read more about sidewalk snow removal rules.

Trash & Recycling Information for People with a Tuesday Pickup Day

As you know, the Streets Division canceled trash & recycling pickup for Tuesday, January 9th, due to the severe weather predictions. Residents with a Tuesday collection should place their scheduled carts out for pickup on Wednesday, January 10th, at 6:30 AM.

Please do not put the carts in the street.  Carts in the street are an obstruction for plows, just like parked cars.  Put the carts in your driveway apron or on a cleared area of the terrace.

If you have a Tuesday pickup, and your cart isn’t emptied on Wednesday – don’t fret!  The Streets Division may not be able to get to everyone on that day.  So, whatever carts they can’t get to on Wednesday, they will return on Thursday, January 11th, so leave them out for collection.
