BWC

After over 8 years of one of the most divisive topics in the city of Madison, the Body Worn Cameras are back on the agenda.  Item 114, legistar 68625: Implementing Body-Worn Camera Pilot Program.  I don't accept the idea that we need a pilot to be able to answer the most fundamental question about this project, what is the cost of rolling the program to the entire city?  This program has been rolled in other cities; I don't understand the difficulty in finding a compatible city to generate cost estimates.  Thus far, Federal funding has come with strings attached to where matching funds are required by the municipality.  Having an estimate of the general cost would provide clarity on the general fund impact and would help us assess what programming needs to be sacrificed to accommodate BWC. 

I appreciate the input from those supporting BWC as well as those against it.  I hear the argument of having majority support from the community.  While others claimed only a minority supports the efforts. Allow me to share one single fact, below is a list of MPD's general fund portion of the adopted budgets over the past 10 years.  Last Friday, I stressed the need to have honest conversations about the budget process and the city's priorities.  Not once in the last 10 years MPD budget has been decreased or has stayed the same, that's a fact.  How much is a city rollout is going to cost?  Another million?  Two?

Lead Shelter Advocate– Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS)

Provide comfort, support and resources for residents and their children in our emergency domestic violence shelter.  While assisting residents with their daily living needs and helping to connect them to resources in our community you will be part of the solution as they begin to rebuild their lives.  Will you be the primary contact person who helps to coordinate the needs within the shift and works to build a safe community based on respect within our shelter?  Current openings are 1st shift (6am-2pm) and 2nd shift (2pm-10pm).

 Shelter Staff Coordinator – Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS)

Are you the person to lead our team of Shelter Advocates?  In addition to providing direct services to our clients, our Shelter Staff Coordinator is responsible for providing supervision, support, leadership and guidance to our shelter staff and volunteers.  You will work closely with our Shelter Program Manager to develop and provide training to shelter staff as we continue to improve the ways in which we can best serve our clients.  If you can problem solve and remain calm in a crisis and are a positive, energetic, and effective leader, we want to hear from you.

• April 20 to May - Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is for adults who wish to help people with emerging mental health disorders or experiencing a mental health crisis. The goal of MHFA training is to teach people to recognize signs and symptoms of an emerging mental health disorder or mental health crisis. Participants also learn a 5-step action plan to engage and ultimately guide people to both professional and community resources that can help. For more information click here and to register here.

• April 21 - Join Dane County staff, City staff and elected officials on Thursday, April 21, from 6:30pm-8:00pm for an opportunity to share your comments and questions about Dane County's proposal for a Sustainability Campus on a portion of the Yahara Hills Golf Course, located just to the south of the existing landfill at 6701 US Hwy 12/18. The virtual public outreach meeting will be held at the Village of McFarland Municipal Center located at 5915 Milwaukee St, McFarland. Register for the meeting here. • April 27, Come join us at the Teejop Hocira Community Center for a day of service and learning centered on stewardship of resources that are vital to healthy and thriving communities. Through partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) and Earth Partnerships, and the Teejop Hocira Community Center, we invite youth and their families to participate in activities designed to connect attendees to research and engagement conducted by individuals and groups associated with UW-Madison and within the Community, and ways to get involved in issues that affect our daily lives, and are especially relevant to Indigenous communities.

May Webinar: MMIW Wisconsin State Task Force

• May 10 -The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Task Force (MMIW) is charged with helping fight the abduction, homicide, violence and trafficking of Indigenous women in Wisconsin. The task force plans to focus on examining the factors that contribute to missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) and the response from social service organizations, understanding the roles federal, state and tribal jurisdictions play, and improving and implementing robust data collection and reporting methods.
