Spongy Moth: Message from Streets Division

posted

Hola!

In the coming days, residents on the streets highlighted in blue on the map below will receive the attached mailer about removing spongy moth egg masses from trees. To those impacted, flyers should arrive by mail during the next few days.

Why are we sending this mailing out now? The Parks Division recently treated egg masses with horticultural oil in Westmorland Park. The concentration of egg masses found in the park was enough that the Forestry/Engineering/Parks team that coordinates the spongy moth response felt it was worth sending out these flyers to the surrounding homeowners so they can check the trees around their homes for the masses, too, and destroy them if they can. Regarding the oiling in Westmorland, this is the same thing Urban Forestry crews have been doing on terrace trees further west throughout the winter months.

Find more details on the city’s Spongy Moth page at www.cityofmadison.com/SpongyMoth. The page will be a clearinghouse for information and city response to spongy moths. Register for updates and 2024 plans.

If residents have any questions about the spongy moth or other urban forestry issues, feel free to email forestry@cityofmadison.com or call 608-266-4816, the main urban forestry phone number.
