Earth Day 2019

posted

Today is Earth Day, a day of special meaning for those of us in Wisconsin inasmuch the celebration was founded 49 years ago by Gaylord Nelson.

We have a very strong environmental tradition in this state, one that we must uphold as our city grows.

In honor of Earth Day, I'll be posting this week about various environmental topics.  But for now I'll leave you with some of my favorite quotes.

"Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty. The objective is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all other human beings and all other living creatures."  Gaylord Nelson

"A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrit, stability and beauty of the biotic community.  It is wrong when it does otherwise."  Also Leopold

"Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and bring strength to body and soul."  John Muir

Happy Earth Day!

(I had the distinct honor of meeting the esteemed Gaylord Nelson when we both spoke at a conference sponsored by The Madison Institue in June of 1991. The conference was titled "An Introduction to Ecological Economics," and was videotaped and distilled into a DVD -- click here for more info.)
