Edgewood Update

posted

As many of you are aware, Edgewood is seeking to vacate their Master Plan. The Master Plan in question was negotiated over a four year period with a tremendous amount of input and participation from nearby residents.  My strong preference would be for Edgewood to amend the plan per the process agreed to in the plan itself, i.e., going to Plan Commission to seek approval for desired changes.

I expressed this preference in an email to Mike Elliott, Edgewood High School's president, shortly after the Zoning Board of Appeals' recent 4-0 vote rejecting the school's appeal. Without going into great detail, I believe vacating Edgewood's Master Plan has the potential of undermining faith in city process. I also doubt this approach best serves the goal of repairing trust between Edgewood and its neighbors.

At any rate, there is little need for residents who either support or oppose the repeal to show up at tomorrow night's Common Council meeting. The resolution for the ordinance change is being referred to Plan Commission to be taken up at their Aug 26 meeting.

As always, I call upon all parties to treat each other mutual respect, remembering our common humanity and essential dignity.
