Last Night's UDC meeting - Two D13 Projects Approved!
postedLast night's Urban Design Commission meeting had a packed agenda. It was the first time UDC was able to meet since the pandemic. Consequently, there were 23 items on the agenda.
Two items included projects in District 13.
First, the 3-story mixed-use building at 1109 S. Park, the Jade Garden site, received final approval. One condition was added, a stipulation that planters be added to the edge of the third-floor outdoor patio to mitigate possible noise pollution spilling over to residents across the street.
I'm very much in favor of this project and believe it will prove to be of lasting benefit to the neighborhood. Certainly, it's a vast improvement over what is there now. The project passed with unanimous support by commission members.

Also winning unanimous support was the Bayview Redevelopment project in the Triangle. I am so impressed with the entire Bayview team, headed by Alexis London, the Executive Director of Bayview Foundation. The amount of work that went into resident engagement is very impressive.
Bayview incorporated values of justice and inclusivity every step of the way. I'm tremendously excited for this project's potential. You can check out the plans by clicking here.
I've believed since the days I was campaigning to be your alder that the redevelopment of the Triangle would be the most important project of my tenure. It turns out the grocery store project at the Truman Olson site further down on S. Park is also very important. However, knowing the history of what happened to the old 'Bush, I have high hopes that Madison can redeem itself in strong fashion with a project the represents the best of who we are as a city.
Bayview received additional good news this week in learning their application for WHEDA tax credits was approved, a big step in securing financing for the project. While much work remains, I'm very much looking forward to the day when we can cut the ribbon on this most exciting project.
It's exciting to push forward with positive projects at our time we are under such stress. These projects were not controversial. Residents were amply engaged, and no one felt left out. There was broad support, no serious opposition at any point.
I'm hopeful that you are all doing well. We will get through this together.
Be safe. Be well. Be kind.
