Upcoming PIM on Changes to the Zoning Code Family Definition, Plus Recording of Last Night's Passenger Rail Meeting

posted

Hi Everyone,

Family Definition Changes

I've asked Zoning Administrator Katie Bannon and Building Inspection Division Director Matt Tucker to join D13 residents in a public information meeting on December 19 at 7pm to discuss proposed changes to the zoning code family definition.

Currently, in a non-owner-occiupied housing unit in parts of our city, including some neighborhoods in D13, the number of unrelated adults allowed is limited to two. The proposed changes would:

  • Allow up to five unrelated adults and their dependents in a housing unit in all zoning districts which allow housing.
  • Keep the current standard of allowing an unlimited number of related individuals.
  • Remove the distinction between owner-occupied households and renter-occupied households.
  • Allow two related families with dependents to live together as one household.
  • Remove the distinction between some zoning districts and others by creating the same occupancy standard for all zoning districts which allow housing.

Additionally, dependency living arrangement and second kitchen restrictions are removed. They are no longer needed in the code with the changes to the family definition. Furthermore, in response to a Supreme Court decision, the maximum number of unrelated people with disabilities who may live together is changed from four to six. Zoning staff have been enforcing the family definition in this way since the decision so this code change is cleanup.

Staff will faciliate the meeting, leading with a presentation and creating space for Q & A. The meeting will be virtual. Please click on this link to register. https://www.cityofmadison.com/MeetingDecember19Occupancy

Last Night's Passenger Rail Meeting

Though I wasn't able to attend -- I was at a DMNA meeting instead -- I'm told last night's events centering on the exciting prospect of passenger rail finally coming to Madison were a huge success!

Here is a link to the video recording of the meeting.

In my mind, this is a HUGE deal. Combined with BRT, passenger rail service to Madison represents a quantum upgrade in public transportation options. To learn more, please go to the Passenger Rail webpage.

Lastly...

Snow is in the forecast. All of D13 is in the Snow Emergency Zone, which means you do not have to abide by alternate street parking except for a declared snow emergency.

Here's where you can find information about our city's Snow Removal Regulations, which includes a list of sand locations. (Hint -- D13 residents can find sand at Brittingham Park and Glen Golf Park. Don't forget your pail and shovel!)

Take care, stay safe, and walk like a penguin!
