TOD Overlay Meeting, Family Definition, 5 Ways to Reduce Salt Use

posted

Greetings Friends and Neighbors,

Here are this week's updates:

TOD Overlay Meeting

The Planning Division is hosting a virtual public meeting this Thursday, January 12,  at 6pm to further discuss the proposed Transit-Oriented Development Overlay Zoning District. Advanced sign-up is required and can be done by clicking here.

Proposed Changes to Family Definition

I have heard from many of you regarding propsoed changes to the family definition that restricts occupancy in certain zoning districts throughout the city. Prior to the holiday break, I have asked the Mayor, Council President Keith Furman, and city staff to delay action on the proposal until June to allow for more study, and they have agreed.

The delay will allow us to look at options like an overlay preserving the existing zoning in neighborhoods adjacent to UW and Edgewood campuses, as well as to make certain any policy change is sound and does not create unintended consequences.

Alder Vidaver and I convened a public information meeting on the topic on December 19 with staff and concerned residents. Here is the link to the recorded video, which due to staff error did not start until about 25 minutes into the meeting.

I will continue to meet with staff and residents as we move toward a solution.

Xmas Tree Collection

The second and final round for collection of your Christmas tree begins on January 17. Click here for more details.

Five Ways to Reduce Salt Use

"Less Salty" is a digital series to show different ways the community can support the City's salt reduction program. The City of Madison Engineering Division has staff dedicated to supporting stormwater quality and the areas waterways. Each episode is one minute or less. There are five episodes, but if you'd like a different topic covered, email engineering@cityofmadison.com with your idea.

Last month Common Council passed a new ordinance limiting the use of salt or other melting agents to the amount necessary to treat the ice so it can be removed. The new change will allow the City to educate and enforce salt standards to property owners who use too much salt or melting agents. For more information, click here.

That's all for now.

Take care, stay safe, and best wishes for the new year!
