Public Safety Alert -- Stranger Assaults in Greenbush

posted

Hi Everyone,

Last night was a long Council meeting. We passed the TOD Overlay, which is a good thing, but the entire public debate exposed a raw nerve in Madison's body politic. I'll share my thoughts in the coming days.

Meanwhile, a third stranger attack has taken place in the Greenbush neighborhood around St. Mary's and Meriter, specifically the S. Mills St. corridor.

Below are a list of safety recommendations provided by the Madison Police Department:

If you must walk in the area during darkness, please remain aware of your surroundings and consider the following:

  • Do not walk alone; walking with a friend or colleague greatly improves your safety
  • Avoid areas without good street lighting
  • Pay attention to your surroundings--look around, make eye-contact; do not become engrossed in your phone
  • Do not wear earbuds
  • Consider carrying a whistle and using it if approached or threatened.  Call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so
  • Listen to your gut--if someone makes you nervous or scared, get away from them.  Call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so
  • Practice when-then thinking:  when 'x' happens, I am going to do 'y'.  For example: I notice that a stranger matching the suspect description is following me.  I immediately run to the nearest open business and tell them to call 911.  Rehearse actions and reactions as you are walking?

Please be careful, look out for each other, and stay safe.
