Family Definition, Electronics Recycling, Public Safety

Greetings friends and neighbors,

Here are this week's updates:

Family Definition Policy

The Housing Strategy Committee will meet in virtual format on Thursday, February 23 at 5:00 PM. The main item on the agenda is amending supplemental regulations within Section 28.151 MGO and definitions within Section 28.211 of the Madison General Ordinances to revise the family definition occupancy restriction. You can learn more details about this meeting, including a review of the agenda, how to register your public comment, and how to watch the meeting, by clicking here.

There is a fair amount of misinformation about the proposed changes and both sides of the debate seem to be talking past each other. Nearly everyone agrees the current policy needs updating, yet differences remain as to who will benefit and who will be harmed.

In my opinion, the issue is not nearly as simple as many on both sides are claiming. I will be writing more about this contentious topic later in the week.

Electronics Recycling Now Free

Starting Monday, February 20, the Streets Division will stop charging recycling fees for televisions, computers, laptops, and monitors. Click here for more information.

Downtown Public Safety Initiative

Public Health Madison & Dane County is leading a new, collaborative approach to preventing crime in downtown Madison. For more information, please click here.

More snow is expected later in the week. Remember to keep your sidewalks clear and walkable, using sand whenever possible, not salt. If, however, you must use salt, remember a 12 oz coffee mug of deicer is sufficient to cover 12 sidewalk squares.

Take care and stay safe,
