Street Construction, New Metro Routes, Lake Monona Waterfront and John Nolen Drive Watershed

Greetings friends and neighbors,

It's the unofficial start to summer, which means that beaches and pools will soon be open to the public, and street construction will abound to our endless frustration.

Here are this week's updates:

Regent & Park Street Closure

For the week of Tuesday, May 30, approximately half of the intersection of Regent Street & Park Street will be closed to traffic for the installation of sanitary sewer.  The following traffic movements restrictions will be in place at the intersection:

  • No northbound Park Street traffic across Regent Street
  • No westbound Regent Street traffic across Park Street
  • No eastbound left turns from Regent Street to Park Street
  • No southbound left turns from Park Street to Regent Street

The closures and will begin at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30 and continue until approximately 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 3.

Greenbush Neighborhood Traffic Safety Public Information Meeting

You are invited to attend a virtual discussion on traffic safety in the Greenbush Neighborhood focusing on Drake St, Mills St, and Randall Ave to be held on May 31st at 6pm. Specifically, the discussion will focus on the changes on Randall Ave to support the new Metro Transit route.

  • Lake Monona Waterfront Ad Hoc Committee: The Lake Monona Waterfront Ad Hoc Committee will take place in-person on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at the Parks Division Lakeside Offices. Agenda items includes review and discussion on the draft of Sasaki scope of services, discussion on Sasaki's visit to Madison in June and more!
  • John Nolen Drive Watershed Study: A public information meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m., May 30, via Zoom. The City of Madison is completing a watershed study in the John Nolen Drive watershed. The City of Madison contracted with an engineering consulting firm to complete this study. Prior registration is required.

  • Public Health’s Violence Prevention Unit is hosting a virtual session on Restorative Justice. The session takes place on Wednesday, May 31st from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. The virtual session is free but registration is required. The session will be recorded and made available on Public Health’s Violence Prevention Unit webpage.

From Neil Young to The Beatles, from the Eagles to Dylan, Springsteen, Petty and many more, Sweeney strings together great cover songs that add up to an enjoyable evening of free live music on the patio at The Glen Golf Park.
  • Take Kids Fishing Day: June 3
  • Cars on State, Saturday, June 3, 2023: One of Madison's finest downtown summer traditions, the 14th Annual Classic Car Show will be held Saturday, June 3rd. This free show spans six blocks of State Street in Downtown Madison. This family-friendly event offers a perfect day for everyone to come downtown, take a stroll around the Farmers Market on the Square and see a wonderful array of vintage cars. You can talk to the owners, grab a bite to eat, and shop at locally owned downtown businesses. Car enthusiasts can explore the history and unique characteristics of classic cars and trucks.
  • Pride Ride, Saturday, June 3, 2023: "Let’s ride for Pride": Trek and Forward Madison FC are teaming up once again to celebrate Pride Month and Bike Week with the 2023 Pride Ride! Meet us at Breese Stevens Field where we’ll head out on a 9-mile no-drop group ride to Olin Park and back. Stick around after the ride to enjoy some block party vibes at the field before Forward Madison takes on the Central Valley Fuego later that evening.

Lastly....

I recall last year's Memorial Day weekend was a time of collective grief, as the nation was stunned by the Uvalde tragedy that had occurred just days before. Sadly, the mass shootings continue and our school children are still at risk.

It's an indisputable fact the Second Amendment does not preclude common sense gun regulation. How many more tragedies must take place before we wake up?
