Ash Tree Removals in District 2

posted

I received the following message today from the Madison Forestry Department:

The ash street trees that have been determined to be unhealthy (re-inspection occurred in 2017) on E.Gorham and E. Johnson will be removed over the coming weeks. We will also need to remove a honey locust that is 50% dead at 815 E.Gorham.  We have worked with the Streets Division and they will begin stump removal immediately following the tree removals.  The trees will be replanted in the spring of 2018.

Since Gorham is a very busy street we have scheduled the tree removals on (18 ash and (1) honey locust) E. Gorham and six (6) trees in the 600 Block of E. Johnson on Saturday, September 23rd beginning at 7 am and lasting until 4 pm (see document Tree Removal 09.23.17 E_Gorham E_Johnson).  If we aren't able to complete these removals on Saturday, September 23rd forestry will finish the following business day after morning rush hour.

The remaining removals on E. Johnson will occur during routine work hours in the weeks ahead after morning rush hour (see document E_Johnson Tree Removal) following September 23rd.  Again, Streets will follow up with stump grubbing and the tree replacement will occur spring 2018.

On both documents (maps) the highlighted (yellow) addresses indicate where the removals will occur. Adjacent property owners were originally notified of the ash removals in 2014 when treatments occurred. The honey locust removal was notified by door hanger on July 19, 2017. I also attached the map of the 2017 ash removal plan for your reference.  You may notice that there are dots indicating where EAB has been found.  In 2016 EAB was found in the Isthmus near Tenney Park.

Traffic Engineering has assisted us in creating a safe traffic plan for both drivers and city staff for the tree removal and stump grubbing.  The Parking Enforcement staff will begin posting temporary no parking signs on Wednesday, September 20.  The no parking signs will remain in place for stump removal.

We encourage you to pass this on to any neighborhood association contacts you may have, along with my contact information if there are any questions.  My direct telephone number is 266-4450.

Sincerely,
Marla Eddy, City Forester
City of Madison Parks Division
