Thank you for the opportunity to serve you

Dear District 20 Residents:

It is bittersweet to share that our family will be moving out of the Meadowood Neighborhood and District 20. This will necessitate my resignation as alder of District 20 on the Madison Common Council on May 20th, 2022. 

Meadowood has been home to our family for over 10 years. We will miss our house that has helped create so many memories for our friends, family, and loved ones. We have been blessed to be a part of a community that is so much more than just our neighbors next door. 

A close neighbor, Shareen Haq, said: "We are a tight knit community and all look out for each other. Miriah, Christian, and their daughter are like family to us. We are going to miss living across the street from them, but also excited for their next chapter as a family." 

Serving as the District 20 alder since spring 2019 has been a distinct honor. It has been great to connect with so many of the neighborhood associations in District 20 over the past several years. Many of these connections are so strong. It is not a goodbye, but a "see you soon" kind of situation. 

The Meadowood Neighborhood Association President, Terry Evanson, said: "It has been my distinct pleasure to work with Christian as a city alderperson and as a neighbor in Meadowood. He is always available and willing to listen and respond to his constituents. He respects and closely works with the local neighborhood associations and keeps the associations in the loop of city council decision-making. His thoughtfulness, hard work and commitment to District 20 has served our district well."

During my tenure, I have focused on enhancing traffic safety, seeking to reduce violence across the city, adequately funding emergency services, supporting the local economy and workforce, boosting adequate housing development, social justice, and making Madison a place where everyone can thrive. 

While in office, I have been a member of the Plan Commission, Urban Design Commission, Public Safety Review Committee, Ad Hoc Landmarks Ordinance Review Committee, Community Development Block Grant Committee, City Count Liaison Committee, and Vending Oversight Committee. 

Serving on the council and advocating for the best interest of District 20 residents has been one of the most rewarding experiences during my career. It has been a true honor to serve you and the city of Madison. I want to share my appreciation to the alders who will continue to serve on the council, dedicate their time, and focus on the needs of residents in Madison. My wife and I will continue to be engaged with residents to support the city and region, and ensure that greater Madison is a place where everyone can thrive.

The procedure for filling a vacancy on the Common Council is set out in Madison General Ordinance 2.03 and Wisconsin State Statute 17.23(1)(a).

The Common Council President oversees the application process to fill the vacancy. Received applications are reviewed by the Common Council Executive Committee. This process includes an  interview of applicants. After conducting interviews, the committee will make a recommendation to the Common Council. The Common Council then appoints the District 20 Alderperson to serve until a new alder is elected and sworn in on April 18, 2023.

The process to fill the vacancy will begin soon and a timeline will be made available in the near future.
