Planning Meeting - Saturday Morning Family Reading Tutoring Launch

Planning meeting this Saturday, January 6 and next Saturday, January 13. Time: 10:00 a.m. - Noon. Preparation for Saturday Morning Family Reading Tutoring Program Launch. 

Location: Southwest Employment Center, 1233 Gammon Road (across from Elver Park). Program Facilitators: Chan Stroman (experienced reading specialist) and Alex Thomason (District 20 resident) will guide us through the implementation launch of the Saturday Family Reading/Tutoring Program. 

The family reading tutoring program for students/families with reading needs will be offered on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Informational sessions & registration for the program scheduled Saturday, January 20 and 27, at the Southwest Employment Center, 1233 McKenna Blvd from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. The tutoring program will be for students and families;  prioritizing families with greatest needs. If interested in tutoring or supporting this iniative, please join us this Saturday, January 6 and next Saturday, January 13.

INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS:

Saturday, January 20 and 27. Information meetings, program structure will be detailed. The family reading tutoring program for students/families with reading needs will be offered every Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Prior to program start, individual meeting with interested student/family to perform reading assessments, establish connection with familiy to determine commitment to participation/attendance and family needs. Tutoring every Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon in 30 minute sessions.

DISTRICT 20 OFFICE HOURS ~ Saturdays, 10:00 a.m.-Noon.

Madison Police Department Programs

 1. Creates job shadow program.

Job shadow program looks to connect officers, community members in a new way. The job shadow program allowing community members and officers to learn from one another. The Madison Proximity Project pairs a Madison resident with an officer. The officer will shadow the individual and the individual will participate in a ride-along with the officer. Anyone interested in participating in future pairings can email Alex Ricketts, Community Engagement Specialist at a ricketts@cityofmadison.com.

2. Madison Police create Hate Crimes Task Force.

 The Madison Police Department has created a new task force to help identify and prevent hate crimes in Madison.

The task force was proactively formed to address bias-motivated threats, harassment and violence throughout Madison. It includes positions from our investigative, community outreach and records units.

Members will investigate reported incidents, assist affected communities when an incident is verified and work with community members to proactively report any warnings signs of bias-motivated crimes.

3. Incidents Reports in District 20:  

Weapons Violation, Incident Date - 01/02/2024 - 11:09 PM. Address:Schroeder Rd and S Gammon Rd. Details:MPD officers were dispatched to a report of Metro bus that was struck by projectiles as it was driving in this area.  The bus was empty of passengers at the time, and the driver was uninjured.  The damage to the bus is consistent with BB gun projectiles. MPD officers are reviewing area video surveillance and will continue to investigate.

Three Kings Day: “A celebration of culture, dreams, and community.” Midwest Mujeres to celebrate Three Kings Day with “Roscas y Reynas”

Midwest Mujeres Collective, a regional Latina network, is offering women in the Madison area an opportunity to be part of a unique Three Kings Day celebration and a dessert networking event called “Roscas y Reynas” on Saturday, Jan. 6, 3-5 p.m. at StartingBlock Madison.

The event will serve delicious roscas de reyes (King’s Cake), and will feature a hot chocolate bar, networking opportunities, and inspiring stories from notable women of color. StartingBlock Madison is an entrepreneurial hub and ecosystem located at 821 E. Washington Ave., just east of the Capitol building in downtown Madison.

Winter Warmth Volunteer Opportunities for Volunteers

Candlelight Walk - Saturday, January 13

Hundreds of softly glowing lights illuminate the trails through Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Edna Taylor Conservation, and Woodland Park. Snowshoe or hike and enjoy a roaring bonfire outside.

Assist with setting up the tea lights on the trails prior to the sun setting.  Meet at Aldo Leopold Nature Center at 2pm.  The paths like to get light it up with lots of lights so we could use some help setting them up.  Then we could use volunteer help with clean-up or picking up the lights at 7pm (also meet at Aldo Leopold Nature Center).  If you can come early or stay late to help, please email John at: Jweichelt@cityofmadison.org

Winter Prom - Saturday, January 27

Put on your dancing shoes and join us at Monona Terrace for Family Winter Prom 2024! The evening will be filled with fun music, light refreshments, crafts, and a photo booth.  Family Winter Prom is a dance perfect for children 13 and under with an accompanying adult. Tickets are just $5 per family.

Extreme Weather Nights (1/3-1/5)

Today to Friday will be EWNs for the Salvation Army and Porchlight shelters. With the wind chill it will be well under 20 degrees. I will send another email Saturday to update, as it looks like we will have more EWNs continuing after Friday.
