Join us in celebrating
The Department of Civil Rights is excited to invite you to a Black History Month showing of “Sarah’s Oil,” a biographical drama inspired by the true story of Sarah Rector, an 11-year-oldAfrican American girl in 1913 Oklahoma who becomes one of the nation's first Black femalemillionaires. The film follows her struggle to secure her oil-rich, formerly "barren" land against greedy speculators, highlighting themes of faith, racial injustice, and resilience.
This event is family friendly, free, and open to the public.
Doors open at 5:30 pm with pre-film remarks, information sharing, voter registration, and the singing of the Black national anthem.
The film starts at 6:00 pm, Free popcorn is available. The film is 1 hr 43 min long, and will be followed by a discussion for those who wish to stay. Sponsors of the event include Monona Terrace, City of Madison, Dane County, and the United States Postal Service.
