Here we go again - snow, then very cold

posted

Hello everyone,

City staff are preparing for another snowstorm, expected to begin overnight tonight.

  • City crews will be undertaking early trash and recycling pickup on Friday to get ahead of the snow.
  • Front facing offices of the City will be closed to the public Friday, January 12, and Saturday January 13. (Note, Monday is a holiday, so all City offices will be closed for that.)
  • Pre-specified salt routes will be plowed and salted once the snow begins. Streets Division crews will not be on the non-salt route residential areas of Madison overnight, so these areas will become snow-covered.
  • MMSD has already closed school for tomorrow, so school buses will not be running. Metro transit will run as scheduled, but you should expect delays.
  • If you choose to travel during the overnight hours this evening or Friday morning, be ready for slippery roads and conditions that will grow increasingly difficult throughout the day. Be slow, patient, alert, and safe. And overall, make good choices.
  • When considering your Friday evening commute, the afternoon on Friday in residential areas may become exceptionally difficult at best. Forecasts show snow accumulation could be as much as 5 inches of snow by 3:00pm and that total is due to rise as the storm will still have several hours to go. As a reminder, non-salt route areas are not plowed until the storm is at or near its end.
  • Make sure to park on the odd side of the street Friday night, and the even side on Saturday night. There is NO snow emergency tonight (Thursday).

The temperature is expected to drop precipitously during the day on Saturday, and remain very cold for at least the next week. Please see the City’s Extreme Cold resource page, which includes information for how our homeless shelters change practices during these times.

Please look out for your neighbors. Help shovel, check on those who may be elderly or live alone, and share your warm heart with food or invitations for meals if that is your inclination. Let’s take care of each other!

Stay safe,

Regina Vidaver
