Types of Vending
The City of Madison has a vibrant street vending program. To operate your business in the right-of-way you must hold all required licenses. High density vending areas may require additional licenses and site assignments.

Basic Street Vending License
A Basic Street Vending License is required for anyone selling goods on City of Madison property. Depending on what is being sold and where it is being sold, a vendor may need additional licenses.

Arts and Crafts Vending
The City of Madison's Street Vending Program supports the City's local artists and makers. To sell Arts & Crafts in the downtown area, all products must be handcrafted and handmade by the vendor.

Merchant Vending
Merchant Vending is a license for retail businesses, located within the Mall Concourse Vending Area, to display their goods on the terrace outside their business.

Mobile Food Vending
Madison has an incredible mobile food vending scene. Food carts and trucks require multiple licenses and permits.

Sidewalk and Roadway Cafes
Sidewalk and Roadway Cafes are for outdoor seating for restaurants, bars, taverns, coffee shops and other food and beverage establishments. A Sidewalk Cafe allows eligible food and beverage businesses to use an approved portion of the public right-of-way. A Roadway Cafe allows eligible food and beverage businesses to use the parking lane for outdoor seating for customers.

Tables, Expressive Vending, and Mobile Sales
T, E or M permits allow individuals or organizations to set-up tables to share information about their organization or cause and sell expressive items. An "Expressive Item" is an item "that is inextricably intertwined with a political, philosophical, religious, ideological or other noncommercial message or cause.
