Meet Apparatus Engineer Matt Anliker

AE Matt Anliker

Where are you stationed?
I'm an 'A' shift Apparatus Engineer on the road.

Where were you previously?
Firefighter at Station 7, Hazmat Team, on the 'B' shift.

How long have you been with the Madison Fire Department?
I’ve been serving on the Madison Fire Dept. since 2010.

Why did you want to become an AE?
The answer to this question is bittersweet. I worked on a great crew at station 7B for over 7 years. The bonds you create with your crew make it feel like family. Sometimes those bonds prevent you from wanting to leave your current firehouse assignment, which happens when you get promoted!

But the decision I made to become an AE has given me the chance to take more ownership and responsibility with the rigs we operate all over the city, and I really enjoy that challenge! Working with a different crew in the city each day also makes the job fun!

What has been one of the most rewarding experiences of your career as an AE?
Being able to work all around the city at different stations each day and help some of our newer firefighters train to become “Acting Apparatus Engineers.”   When I help teach some of the newer firefighters about pumping an engine or putting up an aerial, I recall what it was like for me when I first got on the job. At times it was a bit confusing and overwhelming! And now I’m in the position to help firefighters learn to become an “Acting AE.” This part of the job can be very satisfying!

What are some challenges you have encountered in your new position?
Being on the road as an Apparatus Engineer presents some very big challenges. You need to know where you are going on each and every call, no matter what area of the city you are working in. If you are unfamiliar with any part of the city, it can be a challenge!

I use PulsePoint and its mapping system to get the rig and crew to the call, and usually the Lieutenant or Firefighters can assist you to get you to the address if needed. We all work as a team to get to the call in the safest and most efficient way possible to help the people in the City of Madison.
