Meet Firefighter/Paramedic Zeke Spalding

Where are you stationed?
Station 2 (Grand Canyon Dr.), 'A' shift

What attracted you to this career?
I started volunteering as a firefighter in high school. I was always involved in team sports, so I felt like joining a fire department was a great fit. I also really enjoyed being able to help the community and build an extended family while doing so.

What were you doing prior to joining MFD?
Prior to working at MFD, I worked at UW Hospital in the Emergency Department as an ER tech, as well as a part-time paramedic at Fitch-Rona and Waunakee Area EMS.

Why did you want to work for the MFD?
It only took one visit to Madison to fall in love with the city and its people prior to moving. I wanted to find a way to be able to give back to the community while doing a career that I loved.

What advice do you have for someone hoping to join the MFD as a firefighter/EMT?
My advice would be to keep applying if this is something you would put 100% effort into. Don't get discouraged if it takes you a few times in the process. If you want it bad enough, you will achieve it.
