Apparatus Engineer Jason Wiese

Where are you stationed?
I'm a roving Apparatus Engineer on the 'B' shift.

Where were you previously?
My previous position and station was Firefighter/Lake Rescue Diver at Station 1 ('C' shift), since March of 2010.

How long have you been with the MFD?
I have served on the MFD since October of 2009.

What do you look forward to in your new role as an apparatus engineer?
I look forward to being the bridge between the lieutenant and the firefighters on the crew. The lieutenants have a lot going on day to day. I want to be that apparatus engineer that the members on the crew can go to when needed, for whatever it may be, from personal issues, things about the job, the rig, or the firehouse.

How has your perspective changed now that you're an apparatus engineer? Do you see your role in a new way?
My perspective has definitely changed when looking at the role as an AE for the rig and the crew. Yes, you need to know everything about the rig and the equipment on it, but most importantly, it is my role to get the crew to the call and back home to the firehouse safely. This is a huge responsibility. I take pride in the rig I'm driving and making sure the crew I'm driving gets back to the firehouse safe and goes home to their families the next morning.

What advice would you have for someone who wants to become an AE?
Definitely partake in the Acting AE program that the MFD has to offer and get checked off as soon as you feel comfortable. Pay attention to street signs when going on calls and learn your territory. Also, don't be afraid to follow around your AE, ask questions, ask for advice, help, whatever it may be to help you get in the right mindset to write for AE.
