Meet Lieutenant Laura Prom
posted
Where are you stationed?
I'm a roving lieutenant on the 'B' shift.
What was your previous role prior to your promotion?
Firefighter/Paramedic 2 at Station 5 (Cottage Grove Road)
How long have you been with the MFD?
12 years
What would you like others to know about your position that they may not know or think about?
Being a company officer affords the opportunity to not only care for and support the community, but also to do the same for the members of the fire department. We certainly don’t need a particular rank to care about and support our co-workers, but being in the position of lieutenant does provide more opportunity to engage in conversations, help seek out information, and help with bringing about change that could positively affect others within the department.
How has your perspective changed now that you're a lieutenant? What's different about the way you approach your job or respond to calls?
Station 5, on Cottage Grove Rd., had been my home for most of my career on the MFD, approximately 10 years. As a roving officer, I now work at a different station and with a different crew every day. Being a rover is a unique experience as you no longer have a territory or work with the same people consistently. As a roving lieutenant, my approach to every day is about how I can best support the people I’m working with that day and what their needs are.
What are some of your passions that help inform your life and leadership?
I have the privilege of being a part of the Madison Fire Department’s Peer Support Team. The MFD Peer Support Team is a core group of people who are trained to offer confidential support, information, and referrals to current and retired fire department members and family members who are seeking assistance. Being a part of this team, and being able to help and support our own members and their families, is a privilege and has absolutely become a passion.
