Incident Details
The Madison Fire Department responded to an apartment fire in the 100 block of State Street. Upon arrival, crews observed smoke and flames. Due to the presence of multiple apartments and businesses, as well as the close proximity of neighboring buildings, additional units were dispatched to the scene.
Firefighters located the fire in a second-floor apartment and extinguished it quickly. However, the fire had extended into void spaces and the attic. While some crews searched the building to ensure all residents had safely evacuated, others worked to locate and extinguish hidden fires within the roof and attic.
A total of four individuals have been displaced. Three were relocated out of an abundance of caution due to concerns regarding carbon monoxide and other toxic gases. The Red Cross is currently providing assistance to those affected.
The building was not equipped with a sprinkler system. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the businesses on the first floor were not affected.
