Monona Terrace to Close for Renovation in January

posted

Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center will be closing to the public for just over two weeks in January for facility improvements. The closure will begin on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 following the Madison Home Expo, through Friday, January 26, 2024. Planned projects include replacement of the facility’s signature carpeting, restoration of wood doors and furniture, resurfacing of the kitchen flooring, painting throughout the building, and other repairs.

Monona Terrace’s carpeting was last replaced in 2014, and is showing significant wear after a decade of high use. The new 125,442 square feet of carpeting will be nearly identical to the current and popular deep red color and pattern, which was designed by the late Anthony Puttnam of Taliesin Architects, who was an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright on the original design.

“Following Wright’s organic approach Puttnam conceived of a carpet designed to be an integral part of the overall architecture. Taking a cue from the building geometry, he created a carpet pattern which is evolved from nature, specifically the leaf of the Gingko tree. The leave’s curving shapes are abstracted and scattered across carpet, much like the leaves in the autumn falling onto the sidewalks,” said Architect Peter Rott of ISTHMUS architecture, who consults with Monona Terrace on design and authenticity.

Renovations to Monona Terrace are scheduled every 10 years, which is the expected lifespan of the carpeting, said Monona Terrace Executive Director Connie Thompson. “It’s our chance to refresh and restore our iconic and busy facility, ensuring our readiness to welcome thousands of guests in years to come.”

As a LEED Platinum certified venue, Monona Terrace adheres to responsible and sustainable practices. During the renovation process, all of the old carpeting will be recycled and its fibers will be used for other products.
