The City of Madison is inviting the community to provide feedback during a series of events later this month on the upcoming Public Review DRAFT of the Northeast Area Plan.

The City’s Northeast Area Plan team has been working on the plan since January 2023 to provide a clear vision for the future physical environment of the area while addressing a wide variety of topics, including housing, bike and pedestrian connectivity, street networks, economic development, parks, and more. As with other City plans, the Northeast Area Plan is a long-term plan. It will guide changes that occur over decades.

We are deeply grateful for the many residents across the Northeast area who have taken the time to share their invaluable feedback for the Northeast Area Plan.  Their engagement is pivotal in shaping an inclusive and thriving future, and we eagerly look forward to engaging with residents in the coming weeks. Shaped by resident input, this Plan aims to guide gradual changes to Northeast Area neighborhoods, a transformation of the East Towne area, reconnect our communities across physical barriers like highways and build neighborhoods' capacity to support their residents.

The Northeast Area Plan includes three eligible areas to receive $650,000 of federal funding to support community development initiatives: Sandburg, Burke Heights, and Hawthorne-Truax. The Hawthorne Truax-Community Action Strategy (CAS) recommendations were developed through the 2023 Hawthorne Truax Neighborhood Plan and are incorporated into this Plan.

The Public Review DRAFT of the Northeast Area Plan was compiled after numerous rounds of public participation events, with feedback from Northeast Area residents and stakeholders helping guide the vision for the area. The Public Review DRAFT is posted on the project webpage, along with plan summary display boards, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to review it in advance of in-person and virtual events held May 28 - May 30.

After this series of public meetings and review of public feedback, staff will develop a Final DRAFT Plan for further review and comment by City boards, committees and commissions, which may propose further edits.  The Final DRAFT Plan — and any edits recommended by boards, committees and commissions — will ultimately be reviewed by the Common Council.  Resident comments on the Final DRAFT Plan will be considered by City board, committees, commissions, and the Common Council.
