Madison police welcomes 71st recruit class
MADISON, Wis. —The Madison Police Department welcomed its 71st academy class this week.
There are 35 recruits in this year’s class, including three accelerated academy officers. On Tuesday, they took an oath to serve and protect the people of Madison.

“These officers come from a variety of backgrounds with a plethora of different life experiences and paths. They come together today, with a drive to forge change and to be a part of something bigger than themselves – a desire to be humble, selfless public servants,” said Captain Stephanie Drescher, who oversees the academy and training department.
This year’s academy class ranges from previous law enforcement officers and military members to a teacher and an orthodontic technician.

However, all recruits have one thing in common: they are eager to learn and serve the city of Madison.
“It's a childhood dream come true. I am beyond excited to step into a role of service and work within my community at MPD,” said new recruit Zoe Tabor after being sworn in.
Over the next six months, she and her fellow classmates will receive extensive training in areas such as criminal law, patrol operations, crisis intervention and use of community resources. MPD's training academy is one of the most comprehensive in the country. It is conducted in Madison under the direct supervision of the MPD Training Staff.
“These new officers are joining more than just a law enforcement agency,“ said Acting Chief John Patterson at the ceremony on Tuesday. “They are becoming caretakers of our community. They are committed to earning the trust of the people they serve and fostering meaningful relationships and partnerships with everyone in our community."
The Madison Police Department will be documenting this year's academy through special social media videos posted each Monday.
