The City of Madison’s secure ballot drop box at Fire Station 1 at 316 W. Dayton St. is now open for the June 17 Special Election. A drop box provides a secure way for City of Madison absentee voters to return their ballots to the Clerk’s Office.

If you requested an absentee ballot for the Special Election, you should see it in your mailbox in the next few days. Follow the instructions included with your absentee ballot to make sure your ballot is counted.

Once you vote your ballot and seal it in the completed certificate envelope, you can drop it in the secure drop box at Fire Station 1. Make sure the certificate is complete with the voter signature, witness signature, witness name, and witness address.

The Clerk’s Office has a secure procedure for the retrieval of ballots from the drop box. Two sworn election officials retrieve the ballots from their assigned location. Election officials secure the ballots in a ballot bag with a tamper-evident seal. The seal has a unique serial number, which is written on the chain of custody form.

Once teams have retrieved ballots from their assigned locations they immediately deliver the ballots to the Clerk’s Office.
