School may be out for summer, but the City of Madison Traffic Engineering Division is already looking ahead—and we need your help. We are now hiring school crossing guards for the upcoming 2025-26 school year, and there’s never been a better time to join this rewarding and spirited team.

Crossing guards are considered everyday heroes. They help children safely cross busy intersections, serve as friendly faces in the neighborhood, and remind drivers to slow down and stay alert. It’s a job that matters—and one that comes with smiles, high-fives, and plenty of fresh air.

“Crossing guards are the heart of our safe routes to school,” said Alex Stewart, Crossing Guard Supervisor. “Not only do they ensure kids arrive safely, but they bring joy and peace of mind to families and communities. It's meaningful work—but it’s also a fun way to start your day.”

Why Become a Crossing Guard?

  • Be a Local Hero: Your presence protects children and helps make our streets safer for everyone.
  • Make a Positive Impact: Be part of a program that teaches pedestrian safety, responsibility, and care.
  • Get Paid to Have Fun: $20.86/hour to start, with 10–15 hours of work per week, depending on assignment.
  • Enjoy Your Summers and Breaks: No nights, weekends, or holidays. Summer, spring, and winter breaks are all yours.
  • Perks Included: Paid sick leave, a free Metro bus pass, and a generous uniform allowance for permanent guards.

No experience? No problem. The City provides all training and equipment, including paid instruction and uniforms.
