In Memory of Retired Madison Police Horse Xander 1999 – 2025
Xander was a large Missouri Fox Trotter with a thick black coat that was perfect for warming your hands, petting and hugging. However, his most defining characteristic was his personality; he was a smart, curious and energetic horse who loved people. He was much loved by the Lusk family, but they would be the first to admit that his personality would occasionally get him into trouble. At a young age, Xander discovered how to open gates and would chase other horses while waving a bucket. The Lusks felt that this intelligence and energy should be put to work before it resulted in more mischief and in 2008, they donated Xander to the City of Madison Police Mounted Unit.
In 2011, the MPD Mounted Unit decided to focus on using draft horses for police horses and Xander had to be retired off the unit. Xander passed away on Sept. 15, 2025. Members of the Madison Mounted Unit were present as were members of the Horse First Farm staff. He touched many lives and was a good partner all the way to the end. He will be missed.
