The City of Madison’s planning teams for the Southwest and Southeast Area Plans have published a draft of their proposed actions and maps, giving the community a chance to review them ahead of the next round of public meetings in the coming weeks.

The draft actions mostly focus on infrastructure and development. The recommended actions are drafted for the specific areas covered by the Area Plans and typically do not include general citywide initiatives, which are instead covered by the Comprehensive Plan.

Those interested in the draft actions can get an overview of the proposed actions and maps through interactive story maps, or review the full draft set of maps and actions for additional context and detail.

Since these are draft recommendations, they are subject to change before final drafts of the Area Plans are prepared and presented to City Boards, Commissions, and Committees for approval.

Upcoming Public Meetings

Residents of the Southwest and Southeast Areas will have the opportunity to share their feedback on the draft actions during a series of upcoming in-person and virtual meetings

All meetings will include a short presentation on the draft actions before allowing time for questions and feedback for City staff. The in-person feedback sessions will be held in an open house format. Recordings of the virtual meetings will be posted on the project websites for those who were unable to attend.

About the City’s Area Plans

The City established a Planning Framework to simplify the City’s sub-area planning and make it more equitable. Over the next decade, 12 Area Plans will be developed to cover the city and future growth areas. These plans will address a consistent set of topics and include higher level recommendations.

With 70 sub-area plans adopted over the last four decades, each Area Plan process provides an opportunity to consider older plans for retirement to reduce the number of outdated and overlapping plans. After 12 Area Plans are established, they will be updated each decade to reflect an ever-changing city and keep Plan recommendations in sync with other City initiatives.
