The Madison Fire Department celebrates the recognition of veteran Code Enforcement Officer Scott Strassburg as Fire Inspector of the Year.
Each year, the Wisconsin State Fire Inspectors Association awards this statewide honor to "an outstanding fire inspector who has demonstrated superior achievement in the area of fire prevention."
Celebrated for embodying the values of service, professionalism, and education that define the highest standards of the fire inspection field, Strassburg accepted the award at a banquet held on Thursday, October 23.
"Being a fire inspector has provided so many unexpected opportunities," said Strassburg. "I couldn't imagine a better way to make a career of helping people."
Strassburg has devoted more than 30 years to the City of Madison as a fire inspector. His knowledge, diligence, and leadership have left an enduring mark on fire prevention and public safety. His thorough inspections, commitment to code enforcement, and ability to communicate effectively with businesses and residents have ensured safer environments that benefit everyone across the city.
Strassburg's work has not only reduced risks but has also fostered strong community relationships built on trust and respect.
"Scott takes the time to explain the applicable code sections, and the reasons behind those codes, to educate contractors and property owners," said Bill Sullivan, Fire Marshal for the City of Madison. "This approach has established Scott’s reputation of being honest, fair, and consistent. His willingness to share his experiences and knowledge with fellow fire inspectors has created a strong fire prevention team and has increased our overall impact on improving fire safety in the City of Madison."
Strassburg has also contributed his knowledge and experience at the national level through his service to the International Fire Service Training Association, where he serves on the Fire Inspection and Code Enforcement Validation and the Fire Detection and Suppression Systems Validation Committees.
Throughout his tenure, Strassburg has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, often at a personal sacrifice. Beyond his professional career, Strassburg has contributed nearly 40 years as a volunteer firefighter serving the communities of Blooming Grove and Monona. He also assists with Fire Marshal duties in the Village of Oregon, and he inspires the next generation as an instructor at Madison College.
"Scott has contributed volumes of knowledge to our department and to many others through his long and respected tenure in the fire service," said Madison Fire Chief Chris Carbon. "This excellence speaks for itself, and we are lucky to be on the receiving end of his expertise. Perhaps his best asset is his place as a teammate and leader in the department. It is our privilege to work alongside him each day."
Recognized for his ability to mentor, educate, and motivate others, Strassburg's legacy reflects his passion for public service. The impact of his work is far-reaching and multifaceted, undoubtedly leaving a lasting impression that will continue to benefit future inspectors, firefighters, and the public at large.
"As a kid, I played 'Firefighter.' I never played 'Fire Inspector,' but I'm so glad it worked out this way," said Strassburg. "I'm really thankful that the Madison Fire Department decided to give me a chance 31 years ago."
