MPD seeking participants for the Black Youth Academy

posted

MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Police Department will once again host a summer camp to help foster trust between law enforcement and youth.

The Black Youth Academy is designed for middle school students from the Madison area. The free, weeklong camp features interactive sessions teaching students about policing, first responder careers and other life and communication skills.

"I really liked room clearing. You see it in action movies, and that's not how it happens. It was neat to see it done correctly, and this camp gave me that knowledge," said JJ, a student who participated in last year's camp.

Students will be divided into platoons led by officers. The kids will be able to hear from officers about the paths that led them to a career in policing and connect with one another.

"Try to be respectful and open. This camp will push and encourage you to meet new people," JJ said.

MPD has hosted the Black Youth Academy for more than a dozen years.

"This week is all about relationship building. We want these kids to be able to see an officer on the streets and feel comfortable approaching them," said Officer Tyrone Cratic Williams, who is helping coordinate this year's camp.

Transportation and food are provided for the students. Space is limited, and the deadline to apply is April 20.

Students will conclude the week with a graduation ceremony celebrating their accomplishments alongside family, community leaders and program partners.
