The Madison Common Council Appoints Devine Nzegwu to Alder District 1 Vacancy

At the Common Council meeting on Tuesday, September 8, the Council unanimously voted to appoint Devine Nzegwu (she/her) to fulfill the District 1 vacancy left by former Alder John Duncan, who announced his resignation, effective on July 31, 2026. Alder Nzegwu will serve as the interim District 1 alder until a new alder is chosen in the April 2027 election.

On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the Common Council Executive Committee (CCEC) convened and recommended Devine Nzegwu for appointment to the alder position in District 1. 

I'm looking forward to working with Alder Nzegwu. Her leadership experience will be an asset both to District 1 and the City overall.

Alder Nzegwu is currently employed as a Credit Analyst at John Deere Financial, where she reviews complex information, assesses risks, adheres to policies, and makes fair and responsible decisions. Her financial background has equipped her to ask thoughtful questions, analyze available information, and consider how decisions impact both current needs and future stability. She intends to apply this same discipline in discussions regarding the city budget, development, public services, and community resources.

In addition to her professional role, Alder Nzegwu has held several leadership positions. She is a founding member and the current President of Umu Igbo Unite Wisconsin, has served as the Treasurer and Community Service Chair for the Urban League of Greater Madison Young Professionals, and participated on the National Advocacy and Action Committee for the National Urban League Young Professionals. She is also currently a member of the City of Madison's Parks Facilities, Programs, and Fees Subcommittee. Nzegwu was also recognized as one of In Business magazine's 40 Under 40 in 2024 for her professional and community leadership. Her commitment to representation and service also dates to her time at the University of Wisconsin- Platteville, where she became the first Black woman elected Student Body Vice President.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve District 1 and the City of Madison. I want residents to know that their questions, concerns, and perspectives matter, and I look forward to creating meaningful ways to stay connected with the community. I will bring the same thoughtful approach, curiosity, and sense of responsibility to the Common Council that I bring to my professional and community work. I am excited to get to know even more of my neighbors, hear what is working and what is not, and do my part to serve District 1 well.
