The City of Madison Traffic Engineering Division, within the Department of Transportation, has a new name: the Mobility & Infrastructure Division. The new name more accurately describes the Division's responsibilities and is more inclusive of all the people it serves.

What this Division does affects almost every way people get around Madison. The name ‘Mobility & Infrastructure' does a better job capturing the wide range of our projects and how essential the Division is to keeping the city moving. Only the name is changing, everyday services will not be interrupted.

Madison's mobility system is changing as the city grows. The name change recognizes that the Division's work extends well beyond traditional traffic engineering. Staff plan, operate, maintain, and improve a wide range of transportation systems and infrastructure. This includes bicycle and pedestrian facilities, roadway design, traffic safety improvements, traffic signals, street lighting, roadway signage, pavement markings, communications networks, transportation planning, and data support. The City is planning for a future system that provides safe, reliable, and accessible options for people traveling in many different ways. The new name reflects a broader, people-centered approach that makes it clear the Division serves people who travel by foot, bike, bus, or car.

Same High-Quality Service, New Inclusive Name

Over the coming weeks, the City will begin transitioning public-facing materials to the new Mobility & Infrastructure Division name. This will include a new logo, and updates to the Division's website, online resources, email addresses, documents, and other public-facing materials. The City will share additional information as these changes are rolled out.

The Mobility & Infrastructure Division will continue its work to plan, operate, maintain and improve Madison's transportation infrastructure and systems for everyone who travels throughout the city. The name change will not affect existing public programs, projects, services, or requests. Residents should continue to use the City's existing resources and channels to report transportation concerns, request services, and learn about projects.
