posted

Madison, Wis. –  The Madison Police Department is encouraging people to safely dispose of unneeded and unused prescription drugs during the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

There are collection sites across Wisconsin on Saturday, including two here in Madison. You can stop by any site and drop off your items in a bin, no questions asked.

Here is a list of the prescription and over-the-counter medications accepted:
•    Capsules
•    Creams (in original packaging)
•    Inhalers
•    Liquids (in original packaging)
•    Non-aerosol sprays (in original packaging)
•    Ointments
•    Patches
•    Pills
•    Vials

Pet medications are also accepted. Vape pens and other e-cigarette devices are accepted with the batteries removed. These batteries are highly flammable and it is crucial they are removed before a device is placed in a collection bin.

The following items are not accepted:
•    Aerosol cans
•    Anything containing blood or a bodily fluid
•    Household hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, oil, gas)
•    Illegal drugs
•    Iodine-containing medications
•    Mercury thermometers
•    Personal care products (shampoo, soaps, lotions, sunscreens, etc.)
•    Sharps/syringes
•    Vape pens/e-cigarette devices with a built-in battery that cannot be removed

There are two collection sites in Madison – Elver Park and Warner Park. Both collection sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. You can find a full list of collection sites by visiting the Wisconsin Department of Health Services website.
