Incident Details
Homes were evacuated momentarily Monday evening following a gas leak on the 2900 block of Hermina Street.
Ladder 8 responded to 2922 Hermina Street at 6:22 PM. MGE was also asked to respond. Upon arrival, firefighters found the resident outside and could hear natural gas leaking from near the exterior gas meter. The resident reported that a neighbor had driven into the gas meter, causing the leak, and then left. The resident was asked to evacuate the area.
Ladder 8 initially identified dangerous levels of natural gas in the basement of the home. Doors were opened to naturally ventilate the basement. Engine 8 and Madison Police assisted with evacuating nearby properties as MGE requested a 300-foot safety perimeter.
Firefighters re-entered the home and found gas levels to be decreasing. More windows were opened to facilitate air flow. The leak was found to be exclusively venting outside.
MGE was able to remove the gas meter and plug the gas supply pipe to the home. They surveyed the underground area and the home's interior. A neighboring property was also checked to confirm there was no gas inside.
MGE remained on scene as MFD cleared at 7:53 PM.
